What is a blog? Do I need one? I don’t know how to blog, so can’t I just put my website up without it and start making money? These are some great questions that I have been asked recently
This post is one small piece of the Barefoot Mompreneur blog. You arrived at this page by any number of methods, but you are reading this specific post because you have heard that you need to have a blog to make money in business but you aren’t really sure what that means. A quick search online points us to the Wikipedia definition which explains that “Blog” is both a noun ( a collection of thoughts and information constantly updated on a website) and a verb (the act of regularly updating the website collection) . There are many accepted definitions out there, but to me, the simplest way to think of a blog is this; Your blog is the part of your website where you share with the people who visit your site. You can share personal stories, photos, news about your company, as well as anything else you would like your audience to know.
Well ok, so now I understand what a blog IS, but how do I start one? Fantastic, you can go to several free places like blogger.com and wordpress.com as well as tumblr.com and more and in just a few minutes you can have a blog up and running and staring you in the face, ready for you to share your everything. BUT if you are looking to make money (which tends to be why we want to own our own business) you DO NOT want to use any of these free sites. Here’s the reason why not. You do not own any of the content on these free sites. It’s part of the terms you’ve agreed to when you created the free blog. So you can be shut down any time the company chooses and you can’t use the free site to make any money such as by selling a product or service. Big bummer right? WordPress.org allows you to completely own all content and you are free to make any amount of money with your site that you would like!
